Out of Adversity comes opportunity
The People Group….. a good news story in a tough environment?
An accurate indicator of overall commercial growth can be seen by looking at the health of the recruitment industry. This is an excellent gauge of how our economy is coping with current changes and the knock-on effect to employment rates.
In the midst of all the negativity and general downturn, it can be very easy to lose sight of the fact that this is a transitory environment and positive growth across most sectors is on the not too distant horizon. The recruitment industry has undergone many changes over the past 20 years. These changes have seen massive growth across a number of different areas. Companies have come and gone, and currently according to NRF figures almost half the recruitment work force, has left the industry. Yet it seems that one company in particular has moved from strength to strength and continued to focus on their core specialist areas while developing and growing their business.
The People Group was founded in 1989 by Tom Burgess and is now headed up by Colm Buckley. The group is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year. When asked about what separates them from the pack, “We enjoy what we do, and we work hard at it” said Colm Buckley (MD). This simple mantra seems to sum up what the People Group is about. This is not to say that the last few years have not thrown up a diverse range of challenges for the folks at the People Group. However the company has led the way in the Sales and Marketing arena for two decades while building on client relationships and remaining true to an ethical and consultative approach to doing business. According to senior individuals within the firm it is their long term strategic approach to develop and facilitate the areas in which they operate in that has allowed them to separate themselves from other recruiters.
When asked about the overall increase in unemployment figures Colm Buckley (MD) said that “whilst there can be no doubt the amount of people that are currently out of work is at an all time high, these levels peak in certain areas such as Property, Construction and some areas of Finance and Retail. This would suggest that the decline is not as severe across the board”. “We have grown with our clients and now that our clients are forced to review company structures and a commercial approach to changing markets, so must we” said Brian Sweeney (Senior Consultant)
In terms of advice for prospective job seekers, The People Group recommends a more structured and targeted approach to identifying and securing employment. “Talk to the experts, let them guide you in terms of what options you have and how best to achieve your goals. This is a time to get the basics right, from your CV to your interview and preparation techniques. Effective recruitment and job seeking is a science and there are many ways to both increase your chances and improve your offering to prospective employers”. There are absolutely no guarantees in these times, but the more well devised the approach, the more realistic you are to achieving that goal and securing that job”. In conclusion Colm Buckley said “Good organisations with vision are looking to recruit best in class candidates at all levels. This trend suits our recruitment model, as our service provides far more than that of a high street CV broker. We take our job very seriously and deliver at all levels”.
